Treasurer-Comptroller Team

The Illinois Senate has advanced a proposed consolidation of the state treasurer and comptroller’s offices.

If the House approves the measure, voters would then have to weigh in on a constitutional amendment. The consolidation of the two elected offices could save about $12 million annually.

The comptroller manages the state’s payment of bills while the treasurer manages state investments. Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka praised the bill.

“Illinois’ precarious fiscal condition will not improve until government stops spending more than it takes in,” she said. “Difficult decisions must be made, but consolidation is an easy one.”
