A Jump-Start for 49ers Stadium

City leaders in Santa Clara will give $4 million of redevelopment funds to the San Francisco 49ers football team to get a head start on fixing up a new stadium site.

The team wants to move 40 miles south to a new stadium in Santa Clara from San Francisco’s Candlestick Park.

City Council members rushed the money out the door during a meeting Monday spurred by California Gov. Jerry Brown’s legislative push to disband redevelopment agencies.

City staff said the money is needed to help prep the city-owned site for a possible stadium opening by 2015.

If the NFL team doesn’t move, then the unspent cash would be given back to the city.

Santa Clara has pledged $114 million in public money toward the stadium, but nothing from its general fund, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

City voters approved the use of funds for the stadium last year.
