DPS: A Is For Academics

Three years into his tenure, Detroit Public Schools emergency manager Robert Bobb has won control of its academics thanks to a new Michigan law that gives emergency managers control over more than just a distressed governmental unit’s finances.

Bobb won control after Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Wendy Baxter last week issued a stay of her own ruling that had given control of DPS’ academics to the school board, according to the Detroit News. The judge’s decision reflects the new state law and marks an end to a long fight between Bobb and the school board over academic control.

“This decision comes 36 hours after the governor signed the new public act, giving all emergency managers throughout the state more clearly defined powers over operations,” DPS spokesman Steve Wasko told the Detroit News. “This allows us to continue to implement new academic plans and move forward with all the restructuring we have been working on, without the threat and distraction of legal action.”
