Tempe Sales Revs Rise 13%

Sales tax revenues in Tempe have climbed 13.2% since the beginning of fiscal 2011, with retail sales tax collections up 14.4%.

The Finance and Technology Department said monthly sales tax revenues have posted gains over the previous fiscal year since September 2010.

Finance director Ken Jones said the city collected $44 million of tax revenue in the first six months of fiscal 2011, up $5.1 million during the first half of fiscal 2010.

City manager Charlie Meyer said until the increase in September, monthly sales tax collections had not topped the previous year’s revenues for at least two years.

Voters last year approved a temporary increase in the sales tax rate to 2% from 1.8%. However, Jones said that at the lower rate collections would still be up, to $39.1 million so far in fiscal 2011 compared to $38.9 million in 2010.
