Philly Finally Gets Bigger

Philadelphia has 8,456 more residents than it did in 2000, the city’s first boost in population since 1950. The 2000 U.S. Census reported 1.51 million people living in Pennsylvania’s largest city. That number is now 1.52 million, a difference of 8,456 people and a 0.6% increase.

Mayor Michael Nutter touted the city’s mini-growth spurt last week. He said the city’s Philly Counts! campaign helped to increase participation in the 2010 Census and ensured that more residents were accounted for.

“I am proud to be the first mayor since Mayor Bernard Samuel in 1950 to announce an increase in Philadelphia’s population,” Nutter said. “It is no coincidence that the strategic investments we made have attracted new individuals to our dynamic, growing communities.”
