School Donations Gain

Arizona taxpayers have donated $42.3 million to public and charters schools this year, with the total expected to grow by another $1 million as final 2010 state income tax returns are filed.

The Department of Revenue said 2010 donations probably will not reach the $45.2 million collected in 2009, despite earlier predictions of a 1.5% to 2% increase.

Residents receive dollar-for-dollar tax credits for the donations. The limit is $200 for individual filers and $400 for married couples filing jointly.

Mesa Unified School District No. 4 posted the largest donation, totalling $4.9 million. The district, the largest in Arizona, collected $5 million in 2009 donations.

Ten school districts received donations of more than $1 million, down from 11 districts in 2009.

The Department of Revenue said most districts saw a 1.5% increase from 2009 donations. Charter school donations were up 12%.
