Adopt the Atlanta BeltLine

Atlanta is calling on area volunteers to help maintain the city’s $2.8 billion BeltLine redevelopment project, which is to be partly funded through the issuance of bonds.

The new program, called Adopt the Atlanta BeltLine, provides an opportunity for community groups to play a direct role in improving and maintaining the project, according to sponsors that include Park Pride, the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership, and Atlanta Beltline Inc.

“The Adopt the Atlanta BeltLine program is a collaboration that makes sense,” said Park Pride executive director Tom Salyers. “Park Pride has had great success engaging communities in caring for Atlanta’s parks and green space for more than 20 years.”

The sponsors are cultivating organizations interested in adopting segments of the BeltLine to perform activities such as picking up litter, maintaining green space through weeding and invasive plant removal, cleaning benches and other fixtures, and reporting maintenance concerns, vandalism, or suspicious activities.

“As we continue to open sections of the Atlanta BeltLine to the public, this program will augment the city’s ability to maintain our investment,” said Brian Leary, chief executive officer of Atlanta BeltLine Inc.

To date, 18 groups have adopted a segment of the BeltLine. Others interested in participating can find more information at http://adopt.beltline.org.

The BeltLine is a redevelopment project that will provide a network of public parks, multi-use trails, and transit along a historic 22-mile railroad corridor circling downtown Atlanta with a goal of connecting many neighborhoods.
