After Tight Vote, Another Try

Trustees of the Oklahoma County Independent School District No. 52 will seek approval of a $191 million bond package that is similar to one that failed by 15 votes in December 2010.

The district serves the Oklahoma City suburbs of Del City and Midwest City.

The district board approved a special resolution last week calling for an election in July on a bond package with proposals and projects similar to the previous attempt.

A majority approved the package in December, but the vote fell short of Oklahoma’s 60% requirement to pass school bonds. The vote was 2,464 in favor and 1,668 opposed.

The proposal also calls for closing four elementary schools and two middle schools, and building new campuses for four schools.

The district said closing facilities will reduce operational costs and prevent teacher layoffs.

The district’s general obligation rating is A1 by Moody’s Investors Service.
