Higher Ed Comes Up Short

Indiana college and university officials say they need at least $700 million for new capital projects, but lawmakers say they are unlikely to fund the requests in the cash-strapped state’s upcoming two-year budget.

The Commission for Higher Education has recommended that lawmakers turn down the projects. A local report said the commission’s proposal would put on hold $522 million of new projects and $170 million of projects that have been approved but not funded.

University officials said postponing the projects would mean a “spiral into mediocrity,” the Indianapolis Star reported.
