Pension Payments Put Off

Scheduled payments to the Kansas teachers pension fund and local school districts were delayed last week because of a shortage of cash in state coffers.

It was the second time in 2011 that state aid to 289 Kansas school districts were disrupted due to low cash flow.

Kansas was due to distribute $130 million in monthly payments to the local districts on Feb. 1, but deputy education commissioner Dale Dennis said only $65 million was provided to the schools. The remaining money will be sent to the districts soon, he said.

Dennis said the state has not made its quarterly payment of $59 million into the educators pension fund, which was due Jan. 14. He said it was not clear when the deposit would be made.

Kansas often experiences cash shortages early in the calendar year because most income tax payments are not due until April.
