Contra Costa Pension Fight

Contra Costa County’s pension system is suing the county over wage and benefits cuts for the system’s managers.

The suit by the Contra Costa County Employees’ Retirement Association claims cuts by the county Board of Supervisors to the benefits and salaries of the system’s 12 top and mid-level managers in October were illegal, according to the Contra Costa Times.

The pension system employees are technically county workers and the system pays its employees out of its investment earnings. An independent board governs the pension system.

The newspaper said the outcome of the suit could also affect employees who are members of unions scheduled to vote on new contracts with similar wage and benefit reductions in coming weeks.

Over the summer, the Board of Supervisors reduced the wages of the county’s middle managers by 2.75% and raised employee pension contributions, including for those who work for the pension system.

According to the paper, the pension system told the board to leave its employees alone.

The county backed away from a reduction to the system’s chief executive officer’s pay and benefits but left the other cuts intact.
