Three Regions Nab Funds

Three upstate regions and Long Island received more than $100 million apiece under New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s regional economic development council initiative.

Western, central and northern New York joined Long Island as the big winners among 10 regions, as Cuomo announced the award of $785 million overall. As part of the competitive process, which he announced in July, a strategic plan review committee analyzed and ranked plans for each region.

Western New York’s plan identified eight industry sectors as strategic to growth, including health and life sciences and advanced manufacturing. Long Island’s plan focused on an innovative economy, smart growth, natural assets and workforce and education.

New York City’s $66.2 million for 50 projects included $29.5 million to transform the Hunts Point Produce Market in the South Bronx into a modern food-distribution facility.

“If we don’t nurture it, we will lose it,” deputy mayor Robert Duffy said during a presentation in the city’s Staten Island borough, citing overtures to relocate the market to New Jersey.
