Three California taxpayer associations have filed a ballot initiative to cap state spending.
The California Taxpayers Association, the Howard Jarvis Association and the Small Business Action Committee hope to get voters to agree to reset the Gann Limit, a spending restriction established in 1979.
“It will repair California’s broken budget system by rejecting the failed pattern of wasteful government spending,” the groups said in the filing.
The three groups want to set the spending limit at fiscal 2011’s level that would be adjusted for a change in the cost of living and population.
Earlier this week, Gov. Jerry Brown filed an initiative to raise the income tax on the wealthy along with the sales tax in an effort to help fund education and public safety in the state’s ailing budget.
Other tax initiatives have also been proposed, leading pundits to predict voter confusion.
