Long-Range Road Plan Set

Arizona’s State Transportation Board has adopted a blueprint outlining the projects needed over the next 25 years to keep pace with the state’s growing population.

The Arizona Department of Transportation will use the long-range  plan to allocate resources and develop an updated transportation system.

The board adopted a 50-year plan in January 2010. The latest plan focuses on how the state can use its limited financial resources to develop a multi-modal system that includes road, rail and mass transit.

Scott Omer, director of the Arizona DOT’s planning division, said the effort could involve public-private partnerships. The plan will include preserving current infrastructure while upgrading and expanding highways, he said.

“We are developing a system to fairly and equitably distribute transportation dollars over the next several years,” Omer said. “This will include balancing preservation, expansion, and modernization of our system.”

“We have limited transportation funding, but we also have lots of needs,” he said.
