Mayor Re-Elected

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard won a second term last week, defeating public finance attorney Melinda Kennedy.

Kennedy, a former attorney at Baker & Daniels LLP and deputy mayor of economic development under former Mayor Bart Peterson’s administration, criticized Ballard’s high-profile initiatives to sell the city’s water and sewer department and parking system to raise cash.

The long-troubled city of Gary, meanwhile, gained a new mayor last week. Harvard-trained lawyer Karen Freeman-Wilson, a former Indiana attorney general, campaigned on a platform dubbed “A Blueprint for Rebuilding Gary.”

She said a top priority is marshaling state and federal resources for the city, which the state has warned is close to bankruptcy.

Also in northwest Indiana, voters in the Lake Central School District approved $160 million of bonds for two new schools that marked the largest borrowing proposal in the state.
