Retired police officers and firefighters, and unions representing municipal employees in Central Falls, have filed objections in federal bankruptcy court to Rhode Island-appointed receiver Robert Flanders’ plan to change their pensions and contracts.
According to the Providence Journal, the unions and retired workers will continue to negotiate out-of-court agreements before Nov. 9, when legal arguments are due.
Flanders had filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection on behalf of Central Falls on Aug. 1 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Rhode Island in Providence.
The one-square-mile city, which has a population of 19,000, faces unfunded pension and benefits obligations of $80 million and a budget deficit that exceeds $6 million.
