Hospital Starts $900M Plan

A ceremony last week in San Antonio celebrated the beginning of a $900 million expansion of University Hospital, which is being financed with help from a $751.2 million debt program authorized in 2008 by Bexar County commissioners.

The final bonds of the authorization were issued by Bexar County Hospital District in August 2010. The hospital project includes construction of a 10-story tower that will double the size of the downtown facility.

The renovated hospital will have 713 beds, up from the current 498, and an emergency room twice the size of the current one.

The Hospital District’s $757 million of outstanding debt is rated Aa1 by Moody’s Investors Service, AAA by Fitch Ratings, and AA-plus by Standard & Poor’s.

The district’s facilities are the main teaching facilities of the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio.
