Comptroller Upgrade Eyed

Legislation advancing in the Wisconsin Legislature would authorize the creation of a Milwaukee County comptroller, an independent elected post charged with managing the county’s debt, audits and other fiscal issues.

The city of Milwaukee has long elected a comptroller who manages borrowing and other fiscal issues, and sponsors of the legislation have modeled their proposal after the city.

Under the legislation, the comptroller would have to be a certified or licensed public accountant or hold a graduate degree in accounting and finance. The comptroller would take over the current duties of the county treasurer and comptroller.

Critics of the move argue that the position is not needed.
