Mesilla Eyes Its First GOs

Officials of the small town of Mesilla in Dona Ana County, N.M., are considering asking voters to increase the property tax next year to support general obligation bonds for the first time since the municipality was incorporated in 1959.

Mayor Nora Barraza said the town hopes to issue $1.5 million of GO bonds to renovate a building that houses the town marshal and volunteer fire department.

Town trustees are expected to consider a debt plan in November or December, with a bond election in March 2012.

The current property tax rate is 69.4 cents per $1,000 of assessed value.
