Pass the Fracking Fee

The Pennsylvania Senate’s top Republican wants an impact fee on companies that drill for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale region and he wants it soon.

“I am tired of being here, holding the bag, year after year, trying to get this done,” Joseph Scarnati, R-Jefferson, said during a speech to the Pennsylvania Press Club in Harrisburg. “October is the timeline I’d like to work in.”

A report from Gov. Tom Corbett’s transportation advisory panel called for such a fee on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to offset the costs for communities affected by the multibillion-dollar industry.
