Chicago Worker Wellness

Chicago has struck a labor agreement that calls for employees to participate in a wellness program with an estimated savings of $20 million in its first year. The pact was announced last week by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Federation of Labor president Jorge Ramirez.

The program was developed jointly by labor unions and city officials. It will offer free wellness services, check-ups, and counseling for city workers. “With this partnership, we are able to save millions for Chicago’s taxpayers and improve the lives of city workers,” Emanuel said.

Employees who don’t participate will have to pay an extra $50 per month in health care premiums with fees going to fund the program. The health screenings are expected to save money in long-term costs by finding ailments earlier.
