Langford Won’t Give Up

Former Jefferson County commissioner Larry Langford last week requested that the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals rehear the appeal of his pay-to-play conviction.

The appellate court in early August affirmed his 2009 conviction on 61 counts of bribery, money laundering, mail and wire fraud, conspiracy, and filing a false tax return. Langford orchestrated the now-failed refinancing of the Alabama county’s sewer warrants. He is serving a 15-year prison sentence.

Langford is among dozens of elected officials, contractors, and others who worked on the financings and the sewer system itself who have been convicted of corruption.

In late August, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling imposing a $19.4 million fine on Roland Pugh Construction Co., one of several companies in corruption cases related to the construction of Jefferson County’s sewer system.
