Salem to OK Bond Issues

The Salem City Council will reconvene Sept. 8 to give second and final approval to two bond issues.

The council on Aug. 16 gave initial clearance to $56.6 million of bonds for energy-efficiency improvements to Collins Middle School and Saltonstall Elementary School.

The Massachusetts School Building Authority plans to reimburse the school district for 77% of the costs. The authority in late July awarded $43.3 million to Salem as part of its Green Repair Program.

Salem council members also approved a $1.4 million bond issue for cleanup and reconstruction of McGrath Park, a youth soccer venue closed in May after tests showed elevated levels of lead and cadmium.

"We've fast-tracked this project to do our best to have it ready for the spring soccer season," Mayor Kim Driscoll told the Boston Globe.
