Upper Township employees had an alternative after voters rejected a proposed $9.5 million bond referendum to repair primary and middle schools: They made the fixes themselves.
According to the Press of Atlantic City, employees — primarily carpenters — in the Ocean County community provided the labor while the school board chipped in for materials, the cost of which the Department of Public Works is still compiling.
Meanwhile, the board’s buildings and grounds committee is expected to recommend soon whether to pursue an identical referendum or modify it, superintendent Vincent Palmieri told the local newspaper.
Voters on April 27 defeated the bond measure by a vote of 1,076 to 713, or 60% to 40%.
