Birmingham Set to Vote

Birmingham voters go to the polls next Tuesday to decide among six candidates who will be the next mayor of Alabama’s biggest city. Mayor William Bell, who won the office in January 2010, is seeking reelection.

Bell took over shortly after Mayor Larry Langford was convicted on federal pay-to-play charges when he was president of the Jefferson County Commission and orchestrated the refinancing of the county’s now-defaulted sewer bonds.

Also on the ballot for the mayor’s seat are community activist Harry Turner, real estate investor Kamau Afrika, teacher Patricia Bell, bar owner T.C. Cannon and attorney Willis Hendrix.
