The Detroit Charter Revision Commission is working to meet an Aug. 30 deadline to place a revised charter on the fall ballot.
The commission met last week to discuss objections from Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and state Attorney General Bill Schuette to the current draft charter.
The objections are largely technical. Among them are arguments that provisions to provide public funds for campaigns and regulate lobbyists are contrary to state law.
The charter panel does not need to adopt the recommended changes. If it goes ahead and does so, it would send the suggested changes back to the governor and attorney general for further review.
The commission has asked for an expedited review so that it can deliver the final proposed charter to the city clerk by Aug. 20.
In May 2009 Detroit voters approved a proposal to revise the current city charter.
