Peterson Named Public Representative on MSRB

The Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board announced Friday that it has tapped John Petersen to serve as a public representative on its 21-member board.

Peterson, who is currently a professor of public policy and finance at George Mason University’s School of Public Policy, replaces Robert Jackman, a retired trader at the former Bear, Stearns & Co., who died last month.

“John’s remarkably deep knowledge and experience with municipal market issues will be an enormous benefit to the MSRB,” said Michael Bartolotta, MSRB chairman and vice chairman of First Southwest Co. in Houston.

Petersen joins the MSRB as one of 11 independent, public members, ahead of the board’s quarterly meeting this week in San Diego.

His career has focused both on municipal market policymaking and the financial advisory business, according to the MSRB.

Prior to joining George Mason University in 2002, he served as division director of the ARD/Government Finance Group, a financial research and advisory firm located in Arlington, Va. From 1977 to 1991, he served as senior director of the Government Finance Research Center, a division of the Government Finance Officers Association. He was a principal author of the GFOA’s disclosure guidelines, which set standards for official statements and offering procedures.

Petersen received a bachelor’s degree in economics from Northwestern University. He received a master’s degree in business administration and a doctorate degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Petersen’s term with the MSRB will end on Sept. 30, 2012.
