Governor Wins Plaudits

State Budget Solutions, a national budget watchdog group, gave Indiana its “Reality Check” award and Gov. Mitch Daniels its “Real Leader” award for the state’s budgeting process and increased fiscal stability.

The state’s new 2012 budget “paves the way for lasting fiscal security,” the group wrote in a press release. “The bill creates a structural balance for the current fiscal year, and is projected to secure over $1 billion in reserves by the end of biennium.”

As governor, Daniels has “made the tough choices time and again,” the group said. It said he has more than halved the rate of government spending over the last five years and lowered property taxes by an average of 30%.
