Sacramento Slashes Services

The Sacramento City Council voted Tuesday to make major cuts to police and fire services in the budget.

The council’s move raises the pressure on unions to agree to pension and salary concessions, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The city’s police and firefighters do not contribute to California Public Employees Retirement System — Sacramento picks up the full bill.

If the public safety workers contributed 4% to the pension system like other city employees, it would save the city $4.1 million a year.

Sacramento’s overall contribution to CalPERS has increased by more than 50% in the past five years, according to the newspaper.

The unions have balked at negotiations with the city in the near term, the Bee said.
