Daley Joins Top Chicago Law Firm Katten Muchin

CHICAGO — Former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has joined Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP — the top-ranked legal firm for city bond deals — in an of counsel role in which the firm intends to draw on his experience and relationships to bolster its continued growth, officials announced Wednesday.

Daley said in a statement issued by the firm that he chose Katten over other law firm offers because of their attorneys, business model, and public service. Financial terms were not announced. Daley left office last month after deciding not to seek a record seventh term.

“They’re a well-managed group of talented professionals. They have an innovative yet practical approach to helping clients accomplish their goals, and they are expanding globally,” he said. “The firm also has a demonstrated commitment to giving back to the community, which is important to me.”

The Chicago-based firm employs more than 600 lawyers in Chicago, Charlotte, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington, D.C., with an international presence in London and a license pending to operate in Shanghai.

The firm said it would tap his experience, knowledge and global relationships gained after serving 22 years as mayor and more than 40 years in government to help with its continued growth. Daley will not participate in any of the firm’s work involving the city or its sister agencies.

“His advice and counsel will be invaluable,” said Vincent Sergi, national managing partner.

Katten Muchin has earned nearly $3.7 million over the past five years for city work, mostly on financial transactions, according to Chicago Law Department spokeswoman Jennifer Hoyle. The firm was the lead legal adviser that, along with three others, shared $1.5 million in fees for its work on the city’s controversial $1.15 billion lease of its parking meter system.

Katten has been the top bond counsel of city deals since 2009. It served as bond counsel on seven issues valued at $731 million last year, according to Thomson Reuters. Between 1991 and 2008, the firm has been among the top 10 bond counsel, often placing in the top three.
