Walker Nixes Stadium Levy

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is opposed to extending a 0.1% Miller Park baseball stadium sales tax to fund a new arena for the Milwaukee Bucks, according to published reports.

The head of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce suggested the idea of extending the tax as a way to fund the new arena last week.

The National Basketball Association’s Bucks currently play at the Bradley Center.

State lawmakers imposed the 0.1% sales tax in 1996 on the five-county region around Milwaukee to fund construction of a new ballpark for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Officials have estimated that the tax could sunset as soon as 2016. It generates about $24 million annually, and the revenues repay a bond issue that funded construction of the ballpark.
