Detroit deputy mayor Saul Green, a former U.S. attorney who has been in office since late 2008, announced Monday he will retire next month.
“It was an honor to serve the city of Detroit and Mayor Dave Bing,” Green said in a statement. “I am proud of the progress that has been made during my tenure to improve public safety and restore trust in City Hall.”
Green was appointed to the post by then-Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr. and oversaw the city’s police and fire operations. Before that he was an attorney at Miller, Canfield, Paddock & Stone PLC.
“No one better exemplifies what it means to be a public servant than Saul Green,” Bing said in a statement.
Green said his last day in office would be June 10. Local reports quoted some officials as saying the departure indicates problems in the Bing administration.
