State sales tax collections in Texas last month totaled $1.84 billion, up almost 9% from November 2009. The collections come from retail sales in October.
Comptroller Susan Combs said revenues from the tax, which account for 40% of the state’s general fund budget, continue to beat year-earlier projections.
“Sales tax revenue has now grown for eight consecutive months compared to year-ago levels, with recent gains above the 5% mark,” she said.
The state will distribute $435.8 million of the November sales tax revenue to local governments. The allocation, the last of the calendar year, brings the total annual local distribution to $5.6 billion, less than 1% below 2009 totals.
Cities will share $290.9 million this month, up 4% from 2009.
Houston will receive a $36.2 million check, bringing its 2010 allocations to $473 million. San Antonio’s monthly allocation of $15.7 million is up 2.6% from last year’s $15.3 million. Dallas posted a 5% increase in sales tax revenues, rising to $15.2 million from 2009’s $14.5 million.
Municipal allocations in 2010 total $3.8 billion.
Total allocations of $98.6 million will be distributed to 10 local transit systems, and 174 special purpose districts will share $18.7 million this month.
Counties with a sales tax will receive a total of $27.5 million in monthly allocations.
