Sales Tax Revs on the Rise

October’s Texas sales tax collections totaled $1.62 billion, the seventh month in a row that revenues have exceeded previous-year totals.

State Comptroller Susan Combs said collections were up for several major sectors, including retail, construction, and oil and gas.

The state will distribute $541.4 million  of the sales tax revenue to local governments, an increase of 8.1% from October 2009.

Cities will receive $367.2 million, up from $342.7 million in October 2009. Texas cities have received a total of $3.55 billion in sales tax revenue in 2010.

Houston will receive $44 million, an increase of more than 5% from last year. Dallas will receive $19.9 million and another $19.2 million will be disbursed to San Antonio.

Ten transit systems will receive $118.9 million in sales tax revenue, with Texas counties receiving $32.2 million. The 169 special-purpose taxing districts will share $22.9 million.
