Oklahoma County School District No. 12 is asking voters to approve a request for $29.9 million of general obligation bonds in December that includes $10 million to build an eight-lane, 50-meter swimming pool. The facility would be shared with the city and the local YMCA.
The district serves the Oklahoma City suburb of Edmond and a small portion of Logan County. The election is set for Dec. 14.
Superintendent David Goin told the Edmond Chamber of Commerce last week that the bond request includes $19 million for facility upgrades, acquisition of technology, and security equipment, and $900,000 for buses and other vehicles.
Goin said the unified school district currently holds swim meets at facilities leased from the University of Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma Christian University.
If the GO bonds are approved, the school district and the city will sign a 30-year lease agreement for the site. The YMCA will operate the swimming facility under a separate agreement with the city.
Goin said the agreement requires school bond proceeds be held in a separate fund until the city pays its share of the project cost.
The district’s bonds are rated AA by Standard & Poor’s.
Local voters approved $36.1 million of general obligation debt in November 2007.
