Voters Face Biennial Ballot

New Mexico voters will decide on more than $175 million of proposed state bonds at the November election. The state general obligation bond questions are on the ballot every two years.

Most of the money, made up of proceeds from the $155.2 million Bond Question D, is dedicated to 32 higher education projects at 28 state and community college campuses.

Question A would provide $7.8 million of bonds for senior citizen centers, Question B would allow $7 million for university, school and public libraries, and Question C would authorize $5.1 million for pre-kindergarten facilities and school textbooks. Voters have approved every higher education bond proposal on the ballot since 1992.

Major higher education projects to be financed by the 2010 bonds include $44 million of classrooms and facilities at the University of New Mexico, $28.4 million at New Mexico State University, and a $16 million renovation project at Central New Mexico Community College.

More than 100,000 students attend the state’s 28 colleges and universities.
