Stadium Expansion Eyed

The University of Nebraska board of regents will vote Friday on a $56 million plan to expand its Memorial Stadium to make it more competitive with other Big 10 stadiums. The Cornhuskers join the Big Ten conference next year.

The expansion plan would include $15 million in revenue bonds backed by new ticket revenue, and $40.5 million of private money. The expansion would feature a three-story lobby and boost stadium seating to 90,000 from about 81,000.

University athletic director Tom Osborne told the Associated Press the plan would allow the school to stay competitive with other Big 10 schools.

“You don’t have to keep up with the Joneses all the time, but you at least have to be in the league,” he said.

If approved the project would be completed in time for the 2013 football season, officials said. The 87-year-old stadium was last expanded in 2006.
