DPS Stuck With Oversight

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm told the Detroit Free Press last week that the beleaguered Detroit Public Schools system would likely have to remain under state control for several years.

“There’s no way Detroit Public Schools will be out of an emergency financial position by the end of this year,” Granholm said. “The deficit is just too large. It’s going to take several years.”

DPS operates under a roughly $1 billion budget and currently faces a $363 million deficit.

The state took over in early 2009 and Granholm appointed Robert Bobb as emergency financial manager. His tenure is up in March.
