Cuts on Track at CTA

Chicago Transit Authority president Richard Rodriguez last week said the agency plans to trim $50 million from its next budget by cutting about 70 vacant administration positions and through other measures.

The CTA will limit overtime pay, delay some hiring, freeze nonunion employee pay, and require nonunion employees to take furlough days.

The authority is taking those steps in an effort to avoid service cuts next year as sales tax collections have failed to recover. It was able to avoid service cuts last year under a deal with Illinois that allowed the CTA to tap capital funds for operations.
