Penn’s Clean-Energy Team

Pennsylvania State University will receive up to $122 million of federal funds to lead a team to develop energy-efficient technologies for buildings.

The U.S. Department of Energy selected Penn State to establish an Energy Innovation Hub at the Philadelphia Navy Yard Clean Energy campus. The university will receive up to $122 million during the next five years.

In April, Gov. Edward Rendell wrote to U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu that Pennsylvania plans to invest $30 million for various capital projects at the Navy Yard.

The team will consist of academic researchers, two U.S. national laboratories, and the private sector to create new advancements for more energy-efficient buildings.

Buildings account for nearly 40% of energy consumption and carbon emissions in the United States, according to the Energy Department.

In 2007, Pennsylvania placed third nationally among states in total clean energy jobs, behind Texas and California, according to a 2009 Pew Charitable Trusts report.
