Court Rules for Charters

The Missouri Supreme Court last week upheld a lower court ruling that supports state laws on charter school financing.

The lawsuit filed by the Kansas City School District stemmed from changes made by the state in 2005 that redirected funds from school district coffers to charter schools.

Previously, local school districts distributed the funds.

The Kansas City district argued that the change was unconstitutional because it allowed some of its local tax levy to go to charter schools and because it created an unfunded mandate for the district.

The state’s high court unanimously rejected the district’s arguments.
