Honolulu’s mayor, who is running for governor, resigned from office on Tuesday to comply with a Hawaii state law that precludes a sitting mayor from running for office.
City managing director Kirk Caldwell became acting mayor, pending a special election that will choose someone to complete the two remaining years of Mufi Hannemann’s term.
Hannemann took office in 2005 and takes credit for launching a rail transit project, major sewer and road repairs, beach restorations and a residential curbside recycling program.
“I was very privileged and honored to serve as the 12th mayor of our great city — the city I was born and raised in,” he said.
