Open-Space Progress

On Tuesday the Connecticut Bond Commission is expected to approve a $11.25 million bond issue to preserve open space, Gov. M. Jodi Rell said last week.

“We continue to make great progress toward our goal of protecting 21% of Connecticut’s land — or 673,210 acres — by the year 2023,” Rell said in a news release. “Setting aside lands for open space will help make certain that we preserve what makes Connecticut so special and unique.”

The state has dedicated $58 million to preserve more than 13,800 acres over the past six years.

The bond proceeds from a future general obligation offering will be split between the state’s Recreation and National Heritage Trust — managed by the Department of Environmental Protection — and its Open Space and Watershed Land Acquisition Grant Program. The trust will receive $6.5 million and the remainder will go to the grant program.

The Bond Commission will consider $605.7 million of bonds at its meeting. The largest proposed issue is a $350 million revenue bond deal for clean-water projects.
