Counties Form Task Forces

Broward County Commissioner Ilene Lieberman was elected president of the Florida Association of Counties at the organization’s annual conference last week.

Lieberman announced plans to create two task force groups to address the statewide impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

“One task force will focus on the statewide coordination of emergency management and recovery efforts as the oil spill impacts or threatens Florida counties and make recommendations on programs, procedures and legislative issues,” Lieberman said. “A separate task force will address sustainability.”

A second task force will look at issues including Florida’s economic health, climate adaptation strategies, alternative energy sources, and incentives for the creation of green companies and jobs.

The task forces will make recommendations to the Florida Association of Counties.

Lieberman also attended a joint news conference last week by county commissioners from Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach who signed a joint letter calling for a continued ban on oil drilling in federal waters off the Florida coast and other legislative directives to combat global warming.

Lieberman is chairman of the National Association of Counties’ large urban caucus steering committee, chair of NACO’s housing subcommittee, and a member of the group’s community and economic development steering committee.
