Goldman Taps Cowen for Higher Education

WASHINGTON — Goldman, Sachs & Co. has hired Christopher J. Cowen as managing director and co-head of higher education in its public sector and infrastructure banking business.

Cowen joins the firm from San Francisco-based Prager, Sealy & Co., where he was a managing director and co-head of the San Francisco and New York banking departments and director of the national higher education consulting practice.

He worked at Prager Sealy for 18 years and was instrumental in building the industry’s leading higher education financial advisory business, according to an internal Goldman memo obtained by The Bond Buyer.

He also provided strategic and debt management advice to universities, colleges, and other nonprofit institutions.

Cowen will be located in Goldman’s San Francisco office.

He and higher education co-head R. Thornton Lurie will report to Sue Benz, according to the memo.

Cowen could not be reached for comment.
