Ex-Nassau County Executive Joins Harris Beach

Former Nassau County, N.Y., Executive Thomas Suozzi is joining the new Long Island office of law firm Harris Beach PLLC, a spokesman confirmed Monday.

Harris Beach spokesman Bill Albert said that Suozzi would work as an attorney at an office expected to open its doors in Uniondale by July 1. The firm, which already has 13 other offices in New York and one in New Jersey, plans to staff the Uniondale office with five new hires, he said. Albert said the Long Island office’s areas of practice will likely include municipal bonds but he did not elaborate.

Suozzi, 47, an attorney and certified public accountant, was elected county executive in 2001. The two-term Democrat was narrowly defeated in November by Republican challenger Edward Mangano. Previously Suozzi had been mayor of Glen Cove and worked for Shearman & Sterling LLP and Arthur Andersen & Co.

Last month Lazard Ltd. announced that Suozzi would serve as an outside consultant to the firm on infrastructure and public-private partnerships.

Harris Beach’s bond counsel business has slipped in the rankings this year, according to Thomson Reuters. In New York, the firm ranks 11th so far in 2010 with seven deals totalling $102 million. In 2009, it ranked seventh in the state, serving as bond counsel on 25 deals totaling $1.1 billion. Nationally, the firm’s bond counsel business ranks 149th for the year to date compared to 69th in 2009.
