Barbour Back to Slashing

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour last week revised his executive budget for fiscal 2011 and cut most agency budgets between 12% and 17% from current levels.

He offered a $5.5 billion modified budget plan for the fiscal year that starts July 1 as the state continues to deal with the effects of the global recession.

“This budget forces everyone in government to take a good look at programs and make sure taxpayers are getting the best service for their money,” he said.

Lawmakers resumed work on their $5.5 billion budget Tuesday after a nearly month-long recess that extended their session, now scheduled to end on May 3. The recess was supposed to allow Congress enough time to act on additional stimulus funding, but that has not occurred yet.
