Ex-JPMorgan Banker Brostrom Promoted by Univ. of California

SAN FRANCISCO — Former public finance banker Nathan Brostrom has been promoted to executive vice president of business operations of the University of California system.

In his new position, he serves as chief administrative officer for the 10-campus system, with responsibilities that include the  budget, facilities, and human resource administration.

He comes to the system’s Oakland head office from a position as vice chancellor for administration at the UC Berkeley campus.

Brostrom has served in the new position since September on an interim basis.

“Nathan is not only uniquely qualified for this position, but he brings tremendous energy and optimism,” UC president Mark Yudof said in a news release.

“At UC Berkeley he was a critical force behind the development of a more rational and transparent budget process,” Yudof said. “He is the right person to lead our ongoing efforts to make the university as a whole as efficient and transparent in its actions as possible.”

Before coming to UC Berkeley in 2006, Brostrom spent 10 years at JPMorgan, finishing as managing director and manager of the Western region public finance group.

While there, he worked on financings totaling more than $100 billion, and served as lead banker for the $11.3 billion in electric power revenue bonds sold by the California Department of Water Resources in the wake of the state’s 2000-2001 electricity supply crisis.

He has also worked at Merrill Lynch, Quarterdeck Investment Partners, and in the California state treasurer’s office under then-Treasurer Kathleen Brown.

“I realize UC faces tremendous challenges in the coming decade, but these challenges energize, engage me and strengthen my commitment to preserve UC’s unparalleled history of combining excellence and access,” Brostrom said in a statement.
