Governor’s Race: They’re Off

The race to become Florida’s next governor got off to a swift start last week with state Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink, a Democrat, announcing her candidacy.

And this week, Attorney General Bill McCollum, a Republican, threw his hat in the ring. Another Republican, Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Bronson, also is considering running for the state’s highest office. All three candidates were elected to their current posts.

Sink, McCollum and Bronson, along with the governor, make up the state Cabinet, which oversees the day-to-day operations of various state agencies and approves debt issued by the Division of Bond Finance.

Republican Gov. Charlie Crist announced last week that he would not seek a second term in 2010. Instead, he will run for the seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez, a fellow Republican.
