Berrien County Upgrade

Standard & Poor’s raised its rating on Berrien County, located in far southwest Michigan, to AA from AA-minus in recognition of its strong financial position, boosted by additional reserves available outside the general fund.

“We believe the county’s economy will continue to experience modest growth due to the planned expansion and diversification of its commercial base,” analyst Linda Merus wrote. “We also believe the county will continue to maintain very strong financial reserves and limited additional capital needs.”
